Why this matters

A small systems change, measured at district scale.

Smart Serve focuses on source reduction: preventing unnecessary plastic packaging before it becomes waste. The dashboard gives district leaders a way to compare what is already being saved with what could be saved through further expansion.

Live cumulative totals use the PYLUSD 2026–27 student calendar and exclude weekends, district holidays, Thanksgiving break, winter recess, and spring recess. Minimum days are still counted as student days.

Rollout coverage100%

The wrapped-utensil estimate is calculated from enrollment × cafeteria participation rate × rollout coverage. “Wrappers avoided per day” on the homepage is the sum of that adjusted daily value across every implemented school. For example, a school with 1,000 students, 30% cafeteria participation, and 50% rollout coverage contributes about 150 wrappers avoided per day.

Eric Chang

Eric Chang is a Valencia High School student passionate about environmental sustainability, youth-led change, and improving the systems students interact with every day.

He created Smart Serve: Dispensing the Difference to reduce unnecessary single-use plastic waste on campus and make that impact measurable. The initiative is being developed in collaboration with teachers and staff at Valencia High School and PYLUSD Director of Nutritional Services Carlos Murta, with the goal of piloting utensil dispensers at Valencia and expanding successful implementation across the district.

  • Focus: practical environmental solutions that can scale across schools
  • Pilot site: Valencia High School
  • Initial deployment: approximately 8 utensil dispensers
  • Long-term goal: expand Smart Serve throughout PYLUSD
Smart Serve was built around a simple idea: environmental impact becomes more powerful when people can see, measure, and scale it.
